More than 80 high school students from across Connecticut recently embarked on an eye-opening journey into the maritime, shipbuilding, and defense industries at a special Junior Achievement Maritime site visit to Birdon USA in Portland, CT. Held on May 30, 2025, this unique event offered students an immersive, behind-the-scenes look at high-demand careers right here in their home state.

As part of JA's broader Maritime Initiative, students from Vinal Technical High School, Portland High School, and Westbrook High School stepped out of the classroom and directly into the world of industry professionals. The day was designed to be more than just a tour; it was a "gateway into a career path many students don't even know exists," as highlighted by Jeremy Race, President & CEO of Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.
The event featured dynamic, hands-on activities led by experts from Birdon USA and key industry partners including Electric Boat, the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT), and Jarvis Airfoil. Students got to explore cutting-edge technologies like robotic arms and turbine engines, gaining practical insights into the skills valued in these sectors. The experience culminated in a valuable networking lunch, allowing students to connect directly with professionals and learn how their education translates into real-world career readiness and long-term success.
By fostering these meaningful connections and offering interactive, skills-based learning, Junior Achievement continues to fulfill its mission of opening students' eyes to the diverse and thriving opportunities within Connecticut's Maritime Industrial Base.
